Furniture Materials Guide

When buying furniture, instead of looking at a single material name, find out what is used in which part of the product. The body, the supporting frame, the surface finish and the upholstery each serve different purposes. A proper comparison starts with assessing these parts against how you will use the piece.

Solid wood, MDF and chipboard are not the same thing

Solid wood is made from natural timber, MDF from wood fibres, and particleboard from wood chips. In furniture, these materials may be used together in different parts. Do not assume that a wood-patterned surface is solid wood, or that the whole piece is made from a single material.

Ask separately about the body material, board thickness, edge finishing and surface coating. A material name alone does not prove a product's durability or its suitability for all conditions of use.

DNS is not the same thing as foam firmness

Density, expressed as DNS, relates to the mass of the foam per unit volume. Density and firmness are different properties. Foams of the same density can have different firmness; the feel of the seat is affected together by the type of foam, its thickness, its layers and the support system underneath.

Rather than just looking for a higher number, learn the seating structure of the model and, if possible, try it out. Density information alone does not guarantee an exact service life or resistance to sagging.

Distinguish a fabric's appearance from its fibre content

Names such as linen-textured, velvet or bouclé may describe the look and texture; the actual fibre content should be stated separately. Cleaning method, abrasion information, colour fastness and pilling assessments each answer different questions.

Wear tests such as Martindale show how a fabric performs under specific conditions; they are not a guarantee against stains or resistance to pet claws. Follow the care instructions supplied with the product.

Surface and connection details

For tables and cabinets, the type of veneer or coating, the edge joints, and the hinge and runner system affect everyday use. A stone-look top may not be real stone. Find out the instructions for hot pots, liquids and cleaning products, and do not clean different surfaces with the same method.

Five questions you can ask in the store

  1. Which materials are used in the body and load-bearing parts?
  2. What is the veneer type of the visible surface?
  3. What is the fabric's fibre content and recommended cleaning method?
  4. What are the usage limits of the mechanism and moving parts?
  5. Will I receive the warranty and care documents together with the product?

These questions sofa, bedroom and dining room you can use when comparing models.
